When brothers Harry and George Flegg, the managing directors of Flegg Limited, founded their bespoke joinery and carpentry business in 2018, they started from humble beginnings, crafting furniture in a single garage.

Both had completed apprenticeships and accumulated years of experience as employees in the carpentry industry, giving them the knowledge, skills, and confidence to offer something truly special to the market.
Today, Flegg Limited operates from a spacious, state-of-the-art workshop, delivering high-quality, bespoke furniture and joinery solutions for both residential and commercial clients.

The business has built a strong reputation for its craftsmanship and personalised, customer-focused service, creating exceptional pieces that transform spaces and cater to the unique needs of each client.
But as demand for their work grew, so did the complexity of their operations. To maintain their reputation for quality while improving efficiency, Flegg Limited recognised the need to invest in machinery that could help streamline their processes.
After experiencing ongoing reliability issues with their previous glue pot edgebander from another manufacturer, the team sought a more robust and efficient solution. Following detailed discussions with HOLZ-HER Sales Manager Richard Hird, they opted to invest in the Streamer 1057 XL Power edgebander.

Panel Joinery & Production spoke to Harry and George about the decision-making process and their experience since the installation.
After facing frustrations with their old glue pot edgebander, from another manufacturer, they decided to invest in the HOLZ-HER Streamer 1057 XL Power edgebander.
“We were dealing with a lot of problems with our old system, burnt-on glue, blockages, and inconsistent flow,” explains Harry. “It was time-consuming and slowed us down. That’s when we discovered HOLZ-HER’s Glue Jet system, and immediately we saw it as the solution we’d been looking for.”

The new machine didn’t just solve the immediate problems, it brought about a massive shift in Flegg Limited’s production process.
“The change was transformational,” says George. “The HOLZ-HER edgebander eliminated the issues we were facing and significantly improved both our productivity and the reliability of our workshop. It was a game-changer.”
The impact was felt almost immediately. One of the standout benefits was the increase in productivity. “We no longer waste time waiting for machines to warm up or have to deal with inconsistent glue application,” says Harry.
The HOLZ-HER edgebander offered quick start-up times of just 2-3 minutes and could batch-process panels without the delays caused by issues with their previous system
Quality was another area that saw immediate improvement. With the Glue Jet system, Flegg Limited was able to achieve a cleaner, more consistent glue application. The precision of the nozzle system meant there was no excess glue, and the finish was flawless. “We no longer had to battle with excess glue and poor tape adhesion,” says George. “The quality has improved drastically. We don’t need to do any hand-finishing anymore; the machine delivers a perfect edge every time.”
The HOLZ-HER edgebander didn’t just make everyday jobs easier it allowed the business to take on more complex work with ease.
“We’ve been able to complete several projects involving solid lipping, which we previously avoided because of how time-consuming they were,” explains Harry. “Now, it’s quick and efficient, and the results are fantastic.”
But the benefits weren’t just technical. Flegg Limited also saw improvements in efficiency that weren’t immediately obvious but had a massive impact on their bottom line.
“Before, if a small part needed a re-cut, it could throw off the entire schedule,” says George. “Now, with consistent, accurate output from all our machines, we don’t experience those delays. It’s more than just saving time though; it’s about keeping the production process smooth and consistent.”
Perhaps the most surprising benefit of all has been the reliability of the machine. The HOLZ-HER Streamer 1057 XL Power edgebander is fitted with servo motors to enable automatic setting and recall of programs, essentially de-skilling the operation and delivering repeatability.

“Unlike staff, the edgebander doesn’t take sick days,” jokes Harry. “It’s always ready to go, and that’s incredibly valuable when you’re running a busy workshop.”
Training and support from HOLZ-HER played a significant role in ensuring the team could quickly get up to speed with the new machine.
“The training we received was first-class,” says George. “It wasn’t just about how to use the machine; it was about understanding the principles behind it. That knowledge has made all the difference in ensuring we maintain the high-quality finish our clients deserve.”
Today, Flegg Limited is operating more efficiently than ever. The investment in the HOLZ-HER edgebander has allowed the company to increase its output without compromising on quality. “We’re delivering products of exceptional quality, meeting deadlines, and able to take on more work all without sacrificing the craftsmanship our clients rely on,” says Harry.
For a growing small business like Flegg Limited, investing in the right equipment has been key to staying competitive in an increasingly demanding market.
“It’s been one of the best investments we’ve made,” says George. “We’re able to handle a higher volume of bespoke projects while still delivering the highest level of quality that made us successful in the first place.”
The transformation at Flegg Limited demonstrates that the right investment can elevate a business to the next level. The HOLZ-HER edgebander has played a crucial role in their ongoing success, ensuring that as they continue to expand, they remain at the forefront of the carpentry and joinery industry.
Paul Nightingale, Holz-Her’s National Sales manager said; “The Streamer 1057 XL Power offers an affordable solution to automation, based on our best selling, Auriga 1308 XL Power, it effortlessly delivers finished panels, directly from the machine. I encourage all customers to visit our showroom and see for themselves.”
